The invitation to luncheon was received on Wednesday and the luncheon was to be held on Friday of that same week. The invitation only included the names of Jane and Elizabeth Bennett. Which was not so very strange in and of itself, except late that same day the Bennett’s learned quite a few of the matrons from town were invited. That was when Mrs Bennett began to wonder; why she, the matriarch of Longbourn had not been invited. As for her, she could think of no-good reason, if Lady Lucas, Mrs Goulding, Mrs Robinson as well as Mrs Long had been invited, why not her?

In her heart, she already knew, when she did learn the reason, she would not be happy at all. And for the first time in three years, her nerves were beginning to make an appearance. But she was determined not to fall apart, something most definitely was happening in Meryton. But she would not allow it to send her down that same path, she had worked so hard to overcome. Her family needed her to be the strong, resolute woman she had created, and she would not fail them now.

She waited until later the same evening the invitation had been received and went into Jane’s room where she knew she would find Lizzy as well. After entering the room, she smiled at her daughter’s asking, “So have you decided to go to the luncheon girls?”

Jane was for it of course, she was really hoping to see Mr. Bingley, as the two of them had a great secret, a secret she could share with no one as if yet. Not even her favorite person in the world, her sister Elizabeth. But Elizabeth felt as her mother did, why had they not invited Mrs Bennett. It seemed to Lizzy that every known gossip in the community had been invited to join Bingley’s sisters for luncheon. And she could only wonder, what could that possibly mean?

Jane in her shy way answered, “Well Mama, I am hoping I will have a chance to see Mr. Bingley…He…well he kind of indicated to me that he would be there, as well as Mr. Darcy at sometime during the luncheon…But I most certainly will agree to whatever Lizzy wishes to do.”

Elizabeth hung her head; she really did not wish to cause Jane any type of pain. But at present she was also not interested in going to a luncheon at Netherfield Park. Specifically, with a group of people who she was certain would all be looking to find fault with she and her family.

Finally taking Jane’s hand she gave it a gentle squeeze before agreeing, “Alright then Janey, anything for you. I am certain I can withstand the horror of spending two whole hours with those people for your sake.”

She and Jane broke into giggles with Mrs Bennett joining them before saying, “Well then I guess all will be well. If you both are certain…I shall have the carriage prepared to take you to Netherfield at fifteen minutes before two of the clock on Friday.
